"The Green Man & Other Stories" collects for the first time anywhere eleven of the early short stories of Rand B. Lee, who since 1981 has been delighting — and shocking — readers with tales characterized by humor, pathos, sensuality, and a keen sensitivity to life on the borderland of consensus reality.

Most of the stories included in the collection first appeared in either "Asimov's Science Fiction" or "The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction".

Stories in this volume include
- "The Green Man", in which a lonely little boy encounters a strange, shadowy figure at woods' edge, a figure who will change his life forever;
- "The Pearl", in which a seedy cityscape becomes the backdrop for the death — and redemptive afterlife — of a prostitute;
- "On Springfield Mountain", in which a community of quarantined psi-talents is forced to face its inner demons when a stranger crashes on their mountain;
- "Knight of Shallows" (originally published many years before the appearance of Jet Li's "The One"), in which a young man is catapulted into a series of alternate universes, seeking a murderous version of himself;
... and seven more.

The Green Man and Other Short Stories eBook Rand Lee

I love this book. The story "Still Life with Doves" always blows me away. This author has a way with words that I envy. I remember reading this story way back when it was in Asimov's but that was so long ago it was like reading it new. The fact that this story stood out in my mind after all these years, though, means it made some impact in my poetic brain.

Here is one of my many favorite lines in this amazing slice of life, futuristic story: "Ice is so often portrayed by artists as white, or gray, or blue, but the lake was a deep unconscious green, the coldest color in the worlds."

I love when I find rare gems in the vast and endless forest of only so-so books. It is wonderful to rediscover the short stories of Rand B. Lee. Short story collections are really not all that popular, but when I find authors I love I will buy them first thing. If you love good stories written with a dedication to off-beat characters (including some lgbt) and craft with language, this wordsmith's book is highly recommended.

The Green Man and Other Short Stories eBook Rand Lee Reviews

I found all these stories compelling and resonant. It's always a pleasure to find well-developed characters in fantasy and science-fiction, particularly in short stories where it is much more difficult to accomplish. Mr. Lee does so with grace; the characters are vivid and you get caught up in empathy for them. He writes beautifully and with a lot of compassion.
These stories are well written and you find yourself feeling for the characters. I would suggest that you try these stories. I was not able to make a true connection with the stories but do not think everyone else will have the same problem.
I tried to like this book, I really did, but honestly I just could not relate to the stories or writing style. For Example in the first story is told in a childs point of view but at times it seemed like a adult point of view other than the child-like view at other times. I did not really find anything other than my not liking the book wrong with it. I think that if the book sounds good to you to give it a try. Just cause I did not favor the book, you might. This book was given for an honest review.
What an excellent collection of stories by Rand Lee. If you like you SciFi to shine a light on our own social mores, then this is a collection for you.

But first, my disclaimer I received an eARC of THE GREEN MAN AND OTHER SHORT STORIES, compliments of Curiosity Quills Press, via NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. It took me a long time to get to it, which I regret, but I consider it was worth the wait. Thank you for the opportunity to review this work.

This collection of short stories brings together works previously published by Mr Lee in magazines such as Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction, Amazing Stories and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction.

The collection invariably speaks with a very male voice, with only part of one of the central protagonists being female. In an era where many of the voices in dystopian and science fiction are female (or at least the ones I have been recently reading), it was (and perhaps there are those who will howl me down for saying this) somewhat refreshing to hear a male voice in my head again. Don't get me wrong - I love strong lead protagonists - whether they be of the male or female or indeterminate variety - but I have been reading a lot of stories written from the perspective of women (or girls). This, for me, was refreshing, as well as nostalgic.

There is something about the way Rand writes that reminds me of Asimov himself - the word-smithing, the lyrical turn of phrase and the cadence of the writing. Perhaps that style belongs to a different age - writers who based their craft in the exploration of worlds and the folk who inhabit them. Anyway, whatever it was that appealed, it got me.

I think some of the stories are stronger than others. I was particularly drawn to the dystopian tales The Sound of his Wings, Springfield Mountain and, (not quite as much) Heart in Winter. I think the first two touched me for their exploration of "the other" within a family and community, while "Heart" distressed me a little with its concepts of self. There are some threads that work throughout the stories that I felt were well explored. Without providing too many spoilers, Mr Lee's exploration of fatherhood and love between men (whether fraternal, paternal or sexual) was interesting. If your own concepts of love fall into the strictly vanilla, hetero variety, you may find some of these explorations challenging on a different level - but if you can look at the relationships for what they are - human - then, you may also be left, like me, faintly haunted by the framework within which these (primarily) male protagonists express their feelings.

Before I wax too lyrical, I think I will stop. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this collection. It may not suit every reader, and some of the stories do not quite hit their mark, but, all in all, a very satisfying read.
The mutant stories were the best, I would love to read more. There were a couple of stories that seemed well incomplete. All in all it was worth reading.
